So I got a new DVD Player because my old one finally gave up the ghost. It was a Toshiba. It cost $20 so about all it did was play DVDs. I tried to replace it with an old Apex that I had that also cost about $20 but i guess DVDs have changed over time and that player wouldn’t play any modern DVDs that I had.
I started and ended my search at TigerDirect.com because I’m not sure I really care that much about DVD players. I have a good one that I got from Costco. Its a DVD/VCR combo by GoVideo. I really love it because it has surround sound and three input/outputs but the DVD door wont open anymore (probably because of all of the Netflix DVDs I put in there) so now I run the cheaper DVD players through it so I can take advantage of the surround sound.
The new DVD player I bought is a Toshiba too (SD-6100). It was cheap – around $69. Its a pretty cheap looking thing, all plastic. It looks like if you blow on it or drop it once – it’s toast. It’s pretty light (I think my 80g IPod weighs more). The remote controls decent. So who cares?
I do.
Why?
Because of what it DOES do – It plays DivX! Yes DivX! and that makes this cheap piece of crap worth every penny and then some (to me). No more spending hours converting my DivX and XviDs to DVD so that i can watch them on my TV. No more having to decide if I want to work on my laptop or watch movies. I’m actually playing a DVD with six DivX movies on it while i’m typing this post! (Currently watching Rec)
It doesn’t take much to make me happy but this is the most wonderful thing (in my world) since the IPod and Bose headphones!
🙂
Some nice things about the Toshiba SD-6100:

  • It has upconversion to 720p/1080i/1080p resolution. I don’t actually know what that means but I think it has something to do with HD.
  • It has Multi Format Playback. It reads DVD, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW, DivX (yeah!), VCD/SVCD, CD, CD-R/RW, WMA, MP3 and JPG.
  • Its HDMI CEC enabled with REGZA LINK (whatever that means)
  • Official DivX Certified product. Not sure why you need it but comes with a DivX registration code.
  • Rear Panel Connectors: Analog Video/Audio out, S-Video out; Coaxial Digital, HDMI out.

So now that I’m as bored as you probably are – I’m going back to watching Rec. It’s pretty good as horror movies go. Much better than that Saw crap. It’s in Spanish (for those of us that don’t mind subtitles). Oh and that’s another thing the Toshiba SD-6100 does – it loads DivX subs. I haven’t gotten it to work yet but there is a button and a setup for it.
Bye for now.
