My aunt found this useful chart in an old issue of Essence Magazine from February 1992. The chart was credited to Nana A. Agyemang-Badu.

Cold, flu



Add 1 cup of boiling water to 1 teaspoon of fresh grated root, steep for 10 minutes, strains, add honey.

Sinus congestion


Fights infection; expels mucus; good for sore throat

Add 1 pint of boiling water to 1 teaspoon of root powder. Steep for 5 minutes, strain. Take 2 teaspoons 4 times a day. (Caution: Do not boil or exceed dosage.)

Sore throat, cough


Stimulates mucous membranes; acts as decongestant

Mix 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne powder with boiling water for tea, or with orange juice and maple syrup.



General cold remedy; helps reduce fever

Pour 1 cup of biling water over 1 teaspoon of root powder, steep for 5 minutes, strain.


Rose hips

Rich in vitamin C; boosts immune system

Pour 1 cup of boiling water over teaspoonful of dried fruit and steep for tea; or boil 2 cups of fresh hips to make marmalade or soup.

Nasal congestion


Soothes throat and expels phlegm

Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoonful, steep for 5 minutes, strain and drink.
